Winter Hiking Guide

As we inch closer to spring, going outside on the trails becomes increasingly desirable. Hiking during the winter can be tricky to navigate. Sunny days can appear to be great hiking days, but trails often have too much moisture, and walking on mudding trails can cause serious damage.

We are grateful to Ridge to Rivers, who helps protect and maintain the Treasure Valley’s trail system. Here are three reminders for winter hiking in Idaho…

Avoid Mud

When the trail appears muddy, turn around. Ridge to Rivers provides updated trail reports so you can check conditions before you leave your house.

Using muddy trails:

- Ruins drainage systems

- Damages nearby vegetation

- Causes erosion

Before you go, Be Prepared

- Check the weather forecast

- Bring water, proper clothing, and necessary supplies

- Know where you are going and bring a friend

- Be aware of snow & ice, check the avalanche forecast

Always be willing to turn around, weather can change quickly.

Go Early

In the winter months, ride, walk, or run early in the morning when trails are frozen. Be prepared for ice and cold temperatures.
